Nature's Medicine for You and Baby: Time Outside!

Nature's Medicine for You and Baby.png

Many of my new parents are under the impression that they should keep their newborns inside. I believe the opposite is true. Natural sunlight and fresh air are healing, especially for Mom. Early morning and late afternoon sunlight are especially beneficial as they boost Vitamin D production, a very important component in holistic health. It’s been my observation that midwives and pediatricians suggest Vitamin D supplements for infants. My preference would be that baby gets outside rather than take a supplement (in normal circumstances)!

I live in the mountains of Northern New Mexico where the mountains are plush and there is an abundance of hiking trails. I encourage my new parents to explore in nature (especially in times of COVID-19 when isolation is at its peak). If Mamma needs a little break, taking baby in nature is a great bonding opportunity for Daddy!

Here are a few considerations when taking baby in nature:

  • make sure baby is dressed appropriately for the season

  • make sure baby is shaded from direct sunlight

  • avoid applying sunscreen on your baby

Your baby’s world is 2-3 feet from where they are. Exploration is so immediate and the environment needs to reflect a simple setting. Lay a blanket out under a tree and let baby take a look at the way the leaves move. As you’re with your baby in nature, talk to him/her in a loving, caring way. Explain all the sights, sounds and smells. Language is so important for baby’s development!

Below are a few of my favorite suggestions for baby on the go!

Infant Nuna Tavo(TM) Stroller & Pipa(TM) Lite Lx Car Seat Travel System

In my experience, I have worked with so many clunky models of car seats and stroller travel systems and this is one is by far, my favorite. It is so lightweight and easy to use.

Infant Ergobaby Embrace Baby Carrier

A convenient, ergonomically designed baby carrier to keep your little one close and offers the softness of a wrap while still providing structured support. This soft carrier can be easily attached by one person while still holding the baby.

Infant Ergobaby Aura Baby Wrap

This wrap is wonderful for parents that prefer not to work with buckles. It provides ergonomic support while keeping your little one close and offers maximum comfort for you and baby. A unique guiding edge makes it easy to tie, while the integrated pocket provides built-in storage.
